Extracurricular Athletics

École Charlie Killam School is pleased to support a very strong Physical Education and Athletic Program. Quality daily Physical Education and a prominent Athletic Program have become the practice in our school. At Charlie Killam we strive towards the ideal of having all of our students healthy and active as part of a life-long lifestyle choice. Our school sports, in chronological order of how they occur during the school year, are as follows:

Badminton

École Charlie Killam School offers representative league badminton. The season runs from March through April. There are typically 2 tournaments. The divisional tournament runs in mid-April and the players who move on play in the regional tournament the next week. The team is usually made up of 70 students from all grades.

Each competing school is allowed to enter 2 teams per grade (7, 8, 9) and category (singles girls + boys, doubles girls + boys, mixed doubles). The top two teams from each category move on to compete in the Regionals Tournament.

All competitions are held at Charlie Killam School, the Field House, and Camrose Composite High School.

Doubles practice - every Monday & Wednesday until 5:00

 

Mixed doubles and singles practice - every Tuesday & Thursday until 5:00

 

Divisional Tournament - April 11 (during the school day)

Students will be bussed to their venue. Parents are responsible for pick-up.

All venues start at 10:00am. Game times will be dependent on previous games played.

Basketball

École Charlie Killam School offers representative league basketball. We offer competitive basketball, with 2 girls' teams and 2 boys' teams. The 2 teams of each gender play in the same league and are evenly chosen because of this. The season runs from December through February. The teams will play every school in the league once, plus play-offs at the divisional and regional level. They will also play in 3 tournaments.

Grade 6 students are offered a developmental introduction to the sport where they learn the basics of the game, have fun and play some friendly exhibition games. All grade 6 students from our school are welcome.

2023 - 2024 Basketball Season Schedule

Cross-Country Running

École Charlie Killam School offers representative cross-country running. There are typically 3 different cross-country events in our area: Camrose, New Norway and Hardisty. These races occur at the end of September and the beginning of October respectively. The team is made up of students from all grades.

We are offering a Cross-Country Running Club in the spring, with practices after school on Mondays and Thursdays. Everyone interested in improving long-distance running is welcome! This Club is coached by our professional ultra marathon runner Mr. Daylan Wizniuk and other teachers.

Golf

Grade 7 and 8 students interested in golf can sign up for the Regional Junior High Golf tournament. It is usually held in September each year during school hours. Students will be transported there and back. A maximum of 8 participants can compete from Charlie Killam School. Please speak to Mrs. Bouck or Mr. Findlay for more information.

Running Room Indoor Games

École Charlie Killam School offers representative indoor track running. There are typically 2 different indoor running events in Edmonton at the University of Alberta Butterdome. These runs occur at the beginning of March and the athletes who qualify move on to the finals 2 weeks later. Training for the event starts in January. The team is made up of 35 students from all grades. For more information, please contact Mr. Wizniuk or Mr. Boyson.

Track and Field

École Charlie Killam School offers representative track and field. The season runs from May through to early June. There are typically 2 track meets. The divisional track meet runs in late May and the athletes who move on compete in the regional track meet the next week. The team is usually made up of 50 students from all grades.

This is an all-day event for students in our school. Please make sure to have proper clothing and lots of water and snacks. The results from this day will determine which students will represent our school for the divisional track meet. Top placing from the divisional meet move on to the regional track meet.

Volleyball

École Charlie Killam School offers representative league volleyball during the season from September to November. We offer competitive volleyball, with grade 7 and grade 8 girls' teams and grade 7 and grade 8 boys' teams. The season runs from September through November. The competitive teams will play every school in the league once, plus play-offs at the divisional and regional level. A few tournaments will also be on the season schedule.

Our developmental teams will play in tournaments and will have some exhibition games against other schools.

Grade 6 will be offered introduction training with some non-competitive gameplay, where everyone who is interested in volleyball is welcome to participate.
